Franz Schubert

Performers:
M. I. Glinka State Quartet
Laureate of international competitions Basinia Shulman (piano)

Schubert's work is one of the most beautiful phenomena in the history of music. A great melodist, Schubert left the same mark in the Viennese music of the Romantic era, which was left in Russian music by Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky. From the point of view of the Viennese classics, Schubert is the first romantic, from the point of view of the Romantics, the last classic. Schubert himself, as a composer, put himself below Beethoven, while in a completely innovative way he transformed the culture of the romantic style, promoting it from large, as it were, novel volumes of the Viennese classicism era into formats similar to short stories and novellas.

The lyrical in Schubert always turns confessional, the domestic — eternal and intimate, the everyday — supramundane. Schubert, like no one else, broadcast his time through deliberate ordinariness: beautiful melodies, consonant intervals, home chamber genres — songs, quartets, quintets. What is it in terms of "big styles"? Dust! But this is a deceptive impression. Subsequently, it is in his simple things that the world will hear the uniqueness of a heart-to-heart musical conversation and admire the accessibility of the composer and a person with whom it is surprisingly easy and free, and whose sincerity even in our time seems inexhaustible.

The program of this evening includes two masterpieces from the chamber heritage of Franz Schubert. The String Quartet No. 13 in A minor (or the Rosamund Quartet) was created in 1824, when Schubert decided to abandon songwriting and take up chamber music. The piano quintet in A Major (known as the "Trout Quintet") was completed by the 22-year-old author in 1819, but published only a decade later. Now it is one of the masterpieces of Schubert's chamber heritage.
